The great area between the intervals is the
special province of school, although it
draws on the whole of humanity for its
purpose. It is described as a special
machine brought into being to provide the
shock of energy necessary for decision to be
effective: and also to make available
the-high energy required for the
crystallisation of the subtle and causal
bodies. Although a machine, mechanical work
cannot be useful to it; only conscious work
will do. And while it can take a man across
the MI-FA interval, it cannot do the work
that he must do for himself.
To search for the traces of school in the
common life is a useful practice for those
who are just beginning to pick up the scent
of school and learning to distinguish
between different types of influence. But
that is the limit of its usefulness: many
organisations know about the great precepts
derived from the teaching, but only school
can show what the precepts really mean and
the practical business of how to carry them
out. The practical business of a preparatory
school is to produce a man to hold the
strait gate.

What checks the acceptance of the teaching
so plainly true, and what makes the simple
appear complex is cherished ideas which rise
in resistance to the teaching. These,
remarkably, come down to very few. They
are:’ I know’,’ I do’, and’ I must be
something’. There is such an enormous
difference between ‘I know’ and ‘I am
knowledge’. The first is always wrong; the
second is always right. But this shift puts
knowledge in a wholly different category. It
is my Self. This is why Socrates would never
allow ‘I know’. It varies between ‘I know’,
‘ I know better’ and ‘I don’t know’. They
are all wide of the mark.

When the feelings feel one thing and the
mind thinks another, and the body does
something else, that is no use at all. It
has no effect, it is scattered and divided.
But what the heart would move and reason
would approve and that is done and nothing
else, that is honesty. Anything else is
deceit. And the man whose emotions move him
in one way and reason in another is in a
hopeless state.

It
is when we meditate for ourselves that we
cut the tradition off.
Meditation is for everyone, and you do not
know what it is doing...that is not your
business.

"Where
the breath and the manas come together,
is Pasyanti. It is a very poised situation,
in which the individual can move to any
direction, including going to the Absolute.
It is quite deep, not easily seen; meditation
takes some people there, and they need to
know what to do after that. The mantra meditation
takes some people there, where everything
is reduced to this point in the heart, where
everything seems to be possible. And among
the things that are possible is the dive
into pure consciousness. Meditation can
lead there; it does other things as well.
It varies from person to person what it
does. To a man in pursuit of wisdom this
is very important and that is why the man
on that route seeks very deep meditation,
because there he will discover the laws
which he reads about. And that is why the
way of knowledge and deep meditation go
together, because there is how you find
out."

"The
Absolute is only interested in the inner intent,
the outer form may be whatever it is, that
is not important; and be the outer
form ever so perfect, if the inner intent
is wrong it is not in the least acceptable."

"There
is only one way to know the Absolute and
that is to become the Absolute, because
the Absolute is only known by itself and
not by anything else. There are three stages:
there is serving the Absolute, and that
is where we are; there is being a friend
of the Absolute, a special friend of God,
that is hard work, but very worth while;
and there is being God"

"Worship
is of many kinds. And what makes it worship
is the inner intent; it has to do with the
motivation of the action, not its outward
form. It is a very beautiful thing; I have
avoided talking about this in the past because
it was not much use.
Each worships according to his nature.
Real service is worship, real study is worship
and always accompanied by great praise for
the master being studied, not for himself
but because from his work shines the light
of God. And then there is the worship within,
in the heart itself; and then there is the
worship of God manifest"

"Love
is in fact very cool, that is why it can
last, and never change at all...
When reason enters, everything that happens
to be present and untruth is destroyed in
an instant and left in ruins."

“There
is this awful period that goes on and on,
when we hear the beautiful words of the
teaching, we acknowledge them, they are
obviously right, it is lovely to hear them
and we even recite them to others on occasion.......but
you know we do not really believe them.
We have got another set of ideas, which
we use for practical purposes.”

"The
Trinity? Ah well, there is another threefold
appearance: they are all the same. God the
Father is God in his creative aspect, and
God the Son is the Word, is Om, I mean,
St.John tells us this very plainly, in round
terms. God the Holy Spirit is the Spirit
of Truth, which is the Atman. So there again
you have got the Brahman, Om, Atman."

"You
do have to hear the knowledge. Now people
think they do of course, because in these
inner little circles, what happens is everything
that enters the circle is interpreted in
the terms of that circle, its natural difficulty
over the meaning of the word. The word is
simple enough, its meaning is clear, but
it is interpreted in the terms of whatever
circle the indiviual happens to be in, and
is to that extent changed."
